Being Human / Popular Cultures:

Hypothesis: Middle school students learn better when they are motivated.

John Keller’s ARCS motivational theory maintains that four conditions are required for a person to be fully motivated: attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction. As my students seem increasingly visual in their preferred learning style, my teaching experiences have led me to modify my instruction to incorporating more video and audio. I still include text, but I am using a more "visual" representation via document embeds. I read Steve Kolowich's article, "The Human Element" with great interest. Mostly, because it confirmed my beliefs and practice regarding instructional design that addresses multi-modal learning. Admittedly, I am still balancing the pedagogical benefits vs. the "bling" factor of some of the web tools I use to present my instruction. I strive to empower students for success. My goal is to ensure that students are competent, critical, and ethical users AND producers of information. I recognize the crucial need to ignite a passion and intrinsic love of learning in my students, so I keep learning too...

My artifact is a project wiki for grade 6 students on the topic of teaching and learning with technology using the content of Internet Safety. This follows the International Baccalaureate technology design cycle, thus the design and organization of the wiki.

The technologies used to promote digital learning in this wiki are:
